The 13th infantry in Vila Real is implementing an environmental management system in order to save water and energy, and is installing a hydrocarbon separator for vehicle washing waters.

This activity, organised by this military unit along with the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto do Douro, the City Council and a municipal company for the management of water and waste, established the following objectives:
 

• To enhance the role and the contribution of the 13th Infantry in promoting sustainable development in northern Portugal, when focussing in management systems integrating environmental and social aspects.
• To promote the development of environmental awareness, both amongst individuals and the community in northern Portugal, in order to effect change in behaviour and attitude, especially in the use of water, the treatment of waste and energy management.
• To show, especially to companies and other local organizations, the synergies between quality and environmental management systems, social responsibility and sustainable development.

As part of this initiative, there was also a “Fair for the Environment and Citizenship” in which several organisations and companies exhibited their products and services in the water, waste and energy management sector, in addition to providing general environmental awareness.

Quimitécnica Ambiente, which had been invited by the organisers of this fair, presented an exhibit that explained the current and future position of waste management in Portugal.
